Austin Firefighters Benevolent Fund
History The Benevolent Fund was started in 1953 by Raymond "Speedy" Thames, Tom "Tom Cat" Pinckney and Edgar "Sonny" Pounds when brother Pat Loney passed away from cancer. They decided they should help the family in some small way by collecting a donation from those who wished to contribute. Each person was asked to contribute $5.00. They collected a grand total of $250.00. This amount reflected a membership of 50 firefighters. Since that time the membership has grown. In 2012 we officially formed as a charitable organization and have voted to increase payout to $10 per member. This transition has allowed our contributions to the survivor to reach above the $10,000 level.
