2022 Scramble Against Cancer – Golf Team Registration Open – October 10, 2022

2022 Scramble Against Cancer – Golf Team Registration is Open

Dear Austin Fire Family,

There is something to be said about saving your own. Austin Firefighters have always been good at stepping up when a fellow brother or sister is hurt or experiencing loss.  The first Scramble Against Cancer was hosted at Onion Creek Golf Course on September 26, 2016. It was a golf tournament fundraiser created by his fellow firefighters at Station 8 for their brother, Austin Firefighter Ryan Endicott, who was diagnosed with cancer. His crew alongside the Austin Firefighters Relief and Outreach Fund set in motion a golf tournament that would help Ryan and his family as he battled this awful disease.

Ryan beat his cancer at the time; however, our fire family knew there were more Austin Firefighters who would need our help, and we have been able to help Austin Firefighters over the years since, with funds raised by our Scramble as these proceeds from the Scramble only help Austin Firefighters with a cancer diagnosis. To date the cancer fund has been able to help our brothers and sister with over $100,000 that has been raised with your support of the Scramble against cancer golf tournament.

As many of you know Cancer has hit our Austin fire family extremely hard in 2022 putting many of our firefighters faces to this awful disease.  Based on a study by the IAFF from 2002 to 2019, cancer accounts for 66% of firefighter’s line of duty deaths nowadays.

Travis Maher has been recently diagnosed with this horrible disease. We, as a group, need to step it up another notch, so we can help Travis and his family fight this disease. We are asking all of our fire family to please step up and help us support Travis! If you do not play golf, or you are not able to play because of your schedule, we ask that you please consider making a donation at the same link that is listed below. Ryan was the reason this fund was started, and Travis is why we continue to do this! Ryan was first, but reality is, Travis will not be the last. We have and will continue to fight every year, so we are able to fully support the next brother or sister, active or retired, to fight this awful disease. Your generosity and support in the past years, has allowed us to help Travis immediately, once we heard that he was in a fight for his life. Your continued help will allow us to help Travis and other AFD FF’s in the future!

The golf tournament will be a 4-person team, and we will play a scramble format. When you sign up, please list the names of the players, that will be on your team. We can make name changes, if we need to at a later date. Please list a good contact number, and email, so that we can reach you if we have questions. A small lunch will be provided before the tournament starts, and a BBQ dinner will be provided after play is completed. Our Scramble sells out every year from the support of our firefighters signing up golf teams.  This year Onion Creek membership wants to take an even bigger part in signing up their golf teams in our Scramble, however we are not opening up registration to them until September 1, 2022…our fire family gets first dibs.  If you have any question, please reach out to me, Tommy Mobley at [email protected]
