Motion 23-1 – Extend Collective Bargaining Agreement – Online Vote

February 15, 2023

Motion 23-1 – Do you approve of extending the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) as written? (CLICK HERE FOR LINK  TO WORDING OF EXTENSION)

Background: Arbitration dates are now set and will start in late March and extend into April. The current CBA extension will end at the end of March. If we are to extend the CBA until arbitration is over, the CBA extension must be approved by a vote of the AFA Membership and City Council.

As many of you are aware, the AFA bargaining team is preparing for the upcoming binding arbitration with the COA.  Due to reaching an impasse in negotiations, as well as delays in mediation and the scheduling of arbitration, we are currently in a six month contract extension.  This contract extension expires March 31st.  It is the assessment of the bargaining team that the extension is in the best interest of the membership, and puts us in the best position moving into binding arbitration in March.

For a lot of you, this will be a good enough reason to vote for the extension, and we appreciate and value your trust.  Having said that, we understand the frustration many of you may be feeling with the delays in this process.  Many of you have expressed that these delays have made you feel unappreciated or under-valued by the city.  This might make some of you want to vote against a contract extension as a way to voice your dissatisfaction with the process so far.  This is understandable, but we would like to have a chance to make the case for a contract extension to you before you make up your mind.
